One of the attributes associated with Phase of Earth in the Wu Xing theory is patience. While anything to do with a sailboat is usually an exercise in patience (and some would say futility) Flirt has a special connection with Earth. It’s not that she has been out of the water for over two years now, but what I have discovered in her keel.

Like all of Alberg’s designs, the Sea Sprite 23 is a heavy displacement (for her size) full keeled sailboat. Deep in her keel I found this hardened “gunk”. I do not know what it is, but it is light, but hard and brittle. I literally have had to use a chisel to break it free from it’s home at Flirt’s most bottom most point. Of course this means I have spent several hours laying on my belly with my arms deep into the narrow slot that is her keel. I still have more to go, and I will probably have to take a wire brush to the inside to get it smooth enough for some bilgekote,,  but I did get most of it out

A long time sailor who has been away from the water for too long, I am working hard to bring an old and abused boat back to life. When not working on my boat, I can often be found working as a Stage Hand in Atlantic City or just out and about on my Mountain Bike. I really come off as a quiet and boring person when people first meet me.
